EDWARD FRANCIS MCLAUGHLIN
Clearfield lost another prominent, well-known, and highly respected citizen on Wednesday in the death of Edward Francis McLaughlin, which occurred at his home, 321 Walnut street, at 1:35 p.m.
Mr. McLaughlin had been a sufferer of cancer for several months previous to his death. The effects of the dread disease began to show upon him about a year ago. About the middle of January he was forced to give up his duties at the Dufton Hardware. The illness became acute about two weeks ago and despite every bit of medical attention possible, death resulted on Wednesday.
Few men in Clearfield were better known or more highly respected than Ed. McLaughlin, Born in Clearfield on March 7, 1867, he spent practically his entire life here and during that time won for himself the trusting friendship and respect of nearly everybody in the community.
After receiving his early education here he launched himself into his chosen profession, accountancy, and for a number of years worked for various lumber concerns here. In Oct, 1895, he married Miss Josephine Wilhelm of this place and they went to Patton, remaining three years while Mr. McLaughlin engaged in the hardware business. This was the only period of his life he died not reside in Clearfield.
Not long after returning to Clear flied Mr. McLaughlin entered the employ of the Dufton Hardware Company. He remained with this well-known local firm continuously for 27 years, holding the same position at the time of his death, and it was during that time while coming into direct contact with the public that Ed. McLaughlin won the esteem of the entire community through his congenial personality, fairness in dealings, and a desire to always be of service to those who dealt with him
The deceased was the son of James and Mary McLaughlin, both deceased, member of on of Clearfield's pioneer families. Surviving are his widow and the following children, all grown to maturity: John K of Philipsburg, James F of Hyde City, Richard J and Harold E., both of Clearfield, and Miss Josephine at home. Three children preceded their father to the grave. In addition the following brothers and sister survive: Mrs. Nan Denlinger and Mrs Grace Harris, both of Washington, DC and William J McLaughlin of Patton.
