Daughter of Cornelius "Neal" and Nancy McGlaughlin Dougherty was born in Half Moon Valley, Centre County, PA
Married James McLaughlin January 1864 Clearfield County, PA
Mother of Nannie, Edward Francis, Grace Mary, Johnnie, Thomas C., and William J.

MCLAUGHLIN
Mrs. Mary J. McLaughlin, relict of the late former County Treasurer James McLaughlin, who preceded her to the grave Nov. 17, 1912, passed peacefully to rest at her home on Market street, near two o'clock Monday afternoon June 24, 1912 after a prolonged illness extending over a period of five and a half months. She was aged 77 years, 11 month and 23 days. Her maiden name was Mary J. Dougherty and she was born in Half Moon Valley, Centre County, Pa, July 1, 1834 removing with her parents to Clarion county, PA in 1835. In 1863 she was united in marriage to James McLaughlin, coming to Clearfield county to reside in 1872. To this union was born the following children, namely, Mrs. William H. Denlinger, of Patton, Edward F. McLaughlin, of Clearfield: Mrs. George F. Harris, of DuBois, Thomas C. McLaughlin, of Panama and William J. McLaughlin, of Patton.
Mrs. James McLaughlin was widely known and in every way a remarkable woman, combining as she did so many of the higher and ennobling qualities of mind and heart which made her so. She possessed a richness of christian faith which blossomed out in her every day life as she mingled not only with her immediate family but with all whom she came in contact in the world about her. The young souls growing up in her midst always claimed her thought and active attention and it was ever her admonition " to love one another" and never to speak disparagingly or hatefully of each other and admonish at all time that "Of thy unspoken word thou art master, thy spoken word is master, of thee" or words to that meaning, and she always spoke the wisdom which welled up from a mother's love when counselling those about her. Indeed it was her natural mission in life it seemed to talk the young about her into the higher and better life, correcting their mistakes and chiding their faults without belittling them in their own estimation. She wove the magic fabric of her influence in such a kindly way that it left its impression upon the memory, so that whether rich or poor, high or low, all knew they had found a friend and every man, woman and child who knew her best now lingers at her bier in the mournful silence of deepest respect. It may be truly said that she was recognized as a noble, christian woman who did a great work for good in the world and she really personified the old adage that " politeness is to do and say the kindest things in the kindest way"
She ever stood ready to hear the cry of affiliction and to hurry with willing feet to minister in any way in her power to the necessities of the case and no unfortunate mortal who sought alms at her door ever trudged away unfed or without the cheering, uplifting, blessing word of Godspeed. Her home and the loved ones in it were all the world to her and inspired in her greater emotions than she allowed herself
to express in words but which did ever and anon speak in thoughtful acts of kindness and affection.
Comforting as are all these thoughts and reflectious yet the sorrowing fact that she is no more makes those nearest and dearest ever" sigh for the touch of a vanished hand and the sound of a voice that is still." Indeed we feel that language is poor to fitly pay tribute to the ennobling christian character, beautiful example and life work of this good woman.
The funeral services will be conducted a St. France Catholic church of which she was a devout, faithful, life-long member at 9:30 o'clock Thursday morning June 27. Rev. Father Ryan, officiation. Interment in the Calvary Cemetery. Resquiescat in Pace.
