Rose D. Holloway Hitchcock's parents were Collins Holloway and Catharine Blackburn "Cate" Kennedy Holloway of Brown County, Ohio and then of Douglas County, Kansas.

She was the granddaughter of William Hugh Kennedy (#181471732) and Margaret Jane Ralston Kennedy of Brown County, with Margaret Jane, as a widow, of Douglas County, Kansas. Her grandfather's family was Irish; her grandmother's family was from Scotland and later forcibly relocated to Ireland by the English King James.

Her grandfather William Hugh Kennedy in 1845 died suddenly in a cholera epidemic in Brown County, Ohio. He was the father of thirteen children.

In March of 1855, Rose's parents, grandmother Margaret Jane, about eight of her siblings and about twenty-five Kennedy relatives migrated from Brown County, Ohio to Douglas County, Kansas (which was then Kansas territory) to an area known as Kennedy valley on the Wakarusa River.

She was the sister of Emery A. Holloway, Dora L. Holloway, Winfield Scott Holloway, Grant W. Holloway, Margaret D. Holloway and Thomas Hamer Kennedy Holloway.
