Dora L. Shank Passed Away At Lodi Home

Mrs. Dora L. Shank, resident of Lodi for many years, passed away at 12:30 o'clock this morning at the family home at 616 North School street following a long illness. She was a native of Kansas aged 75 years.

The deceased was the wife of the late William Shank, mother of Floyd C Shank, San Francisco; Roy W. Shank, Lomita Park; Neil D. Shank, Lodi; grandmother of Lester W. Dixon, Lodi; Gloria and Ellen Dale Shank, San Francisco; Donald and Barbara Shank, Lomita Park. Lodi News-Sentinel January 22, 1936
-----------------------------------

Dora L. Holloway Shank was the daughter of Collins Holloway and Catharine "Cate" Blackburn Kennedy Holloway of Brown County, Ohio, and after 1855, of Douglas County, Kansas.

She was the granddaughter of William Hugh Kennedy (#181471732) and Margaret Jane Ralston Kennedy (#11010850) of Brown County, Ohio and Margaret Jane, as a widow, later of Douglas County, Kansas.

She was the great-granddaughter of Jonathan Ralston and Elizabeth Pitzer Ralston of Brown County, Ohio.

In 1845, her grandfather William Hugh Kennedy died suddenly in a cholera epidemic in Brown County, Ohio. With Margaret Jane, he was the father of thirteen children, all born in Brown County, Ohio.

Her grandfather Hugh Kennedy was of Irish ancestry. Her grandmother Margaret Jane Ralston Kennedy was of Scottish heritage, but her Ralston family was forcibly relocated to Ireland at the order of the English King James. Because of their torture in Ireland, the Ralston family came to America, first settling in Pennsylvania and thence to Ohio.

Her parents, her widowed grandmother, siblings and about twenty-five related members of the Kennedy family, in March of 1855 relocated from Brown County, Ohio to Douglas County, Kansas (then Kansas Territory) on the Wakarusa River in an area called Kennedy Valley where they could stake out a land claim for $1.00 per acre.

She married William Shank who is buried beside her.

She was the mother of Floyd Collins Shank (#166186647), Roy W. Shank (#3632186), Neil D. Shank (#125078813) and Daisy Kate Shank Dixon.
