St. George, Utah - Zella O'Brien was born April 1, 1929 in LaVerkin, Utah to Charles and Retta Stock Cox. She was the sixth of ten children. She died March 20, 2011 of accidental carbon monoxide poisoning. She married Edward O'Brien on January 29, 1966 in the St. George LDS Temple. They lived in Ivins, Utah for many years, then moved to Cane Beds, Arizona. Zella worked in the St. George LDS Temple laundry for many years and enjoyed the friendships she made there. Zella had many hobbies; she loved to cook and delighted in hiding small treasures in cookies and cakes. She was a very talented artist and carved many creative animals and other items. She crocheted beautiful doilies and clothing items. She loved animals and always took care of abandoned and unloved creatures. She was very tendered hearted and sympathetic with the downtrodden and lonely. Zella was dearly beloved by her nieces and nephews and loved to spoil them. She was known as "Aunt Candy" to many of them. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Ed; brother, Wayne Cox; and sisters: Thelma Keegan and Velda Lang. She is survived by brothers: Chester Cox, Grant Cox and Norris (Kaylene) Cox; and sisters: Rita Cox, Melva (George) Spencer and Geneva Tanner. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 26, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at the Metcalf Mortuary Chapel, 288 West St. George Blvd., St. George, Utah. A visitation will be held Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. at the Mortuary, prior to services. Interment will be held at the Canes Bed Cemetery.
