Jane is the fourth child of Rev. James Small and Mary Ann Wallace. She first married Frederick M. Johnson, 10 Feb. 1846, Meigs County, Tennessee. She married James Hill when he came back from Oregon, 4 Feb 1849, McMinn County, Tennessee. They accompanied James' brothers Isaac, William and Claiborne to Oregon, remained there for a few years before returning to Missouri.
Their son, William Shasta Hill, was the first white child born in Shasta, Butte Co., CA where they were mining gold. He died in August 1854 after their return and is presumably buried in this cemetery.
