Miliary: During the Civil War, he enlisted as a Private in Company A, Sixteenth Missouri Volunteer Cavalry on 1 November 1863; discharged 30 June 1865 at Springfield, Missouri . He also served 90 days in 1861 with the 2nd Kansas Inft. and with the Missouri State Militia. He received a pension (Certificate #890200) of $23 per month because of rheumatism and heart disease under the Act of 27 June 1890. In his military records he was described as 6 feet tall, fair complexion, hazel eyes, and dark hair. He graduated from the American Medical College at St. Louis in 1880. He practiced medicine in Ozark County and Douglas County, Missouri . The Douglas County post office of Smallett was named for him.
