TRAVERSE CITY - Ralph Joseph Lautner, 87, of Traverse City, died Friday evening, Jan. 6, 2006, at his home, surrounded by his loving and caring family.

Born April 15, 1918, in Leelanau County, he was the son of the late Joseph and Florence (Courtade) Lautner, pioneer families of Leelanau County and Grand Traverse County. On Dec. 23, 1941, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Traverse City, he married the former Mary Elizabeth Emerson.

Ralph worked for many years as a machinist for Traverse City Iron Works

He proudly served his country in the United States Army during World War II.

A Grand Traverse area native, Ralph was very involved and committed to the community of Traverse City. His memberships included Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus-Council #1213, D.A.V. #38 (former Commander), Grand Traverse County V.A. Trust Fund, VFW Cherryland Post #2780, Grand Traverse Pioneer and Historical Society, Friends of Con Foster Museum, Fellow of Northwestern Michigan College and Life member of Grand Traverse Astronomical Society. Ralph and Mary were very proud to have donated property to Northwest Michigan College, where the College Observatory is now located.

He is survived by his family; wife of 64 years, Mary Elizabeth Lautner; children, Gerard "Jerry" (Anne) Lautner of Traverse City, Sharon (Alan) Buell of Kingsley, Dennis (Ann) Lautner of Traverse City, Bethalee Alpers of Traverse City and Bruce (Deborah) Lautner of Traverse City; 13 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; brother, Cletus (Marie) Lautner of Traverse City; and a sister, Cleo Cavitch of Traverse City.

Ralph was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Melissa Lautner; and two brothers, Jerome and LaVern Lautner.

Friends may call Tuesday, Jan. 10, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home, where a rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m.

A Funeral Mass will be offered at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 11, with Rev. James Hayden serving as celebrant. The Lautner family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service. Burial will take place in Oakwood Catholic Diocesan Cemetery.

In remembrance of Ralph, memorials may be directed to Immaculate Conception Catholic Church or to the Grand Traverse Pioneer and Historical Society. Envelopes may be obtained either at the funeral home or church.
