Anton "Bill" Nelson, age 91, of Alta, Iowa died Sunday, March 6, 2011 at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake, Iowa.

Bill was born on December 14, 1919 in Cherokee, Iowa the son of Axel and Julia (Erickson) Nelson. He was baptized and later confirmed at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Cherokee, Iowa. Growing up, Bill attended grade school in Larrabee and graduated high school in 1937.

On February 20, 1945, Bill entered the United States Navy where he served his country until he was honorably discharged on July 12, 1946.

On January 30, 1950 Bill was united in marriage to Adeline Kruckenberg in Lytton, Iowa. Together, this union was blessed with four children: Lois, John, Bruce, and Cynthia.

Bill worked as a farmer until his retirement in 1999. He grew many apple trees and enjoyed spending time outdoors, camping and gardening. Some of his favorite pastimes included playing cards and going dancing. Bill cherished the times he was able to spend with his family, especially with his grandchildren. Bill will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

Those left to cherish in his memory include his children: Lois (Allan) Todd of Holstein, Iowa; Bruce Nelson of Alta, Iowa; Cynthia (Brad) Pedersen of Alta, Iowa; daughter-in-law, Sylvia Nelson of Newell, Iowa; grandchildren: Layne (Jeana) Todd; Jay (Stacey) Todd; Sherry (Louie) DeRoos; Brittney Nelson; Megan Nelson; Stephanie (Chris) Anderson; Amanda Nelson (Kim Colantuono); Julia (Joe) Pick; Kursten Nelson; Elizabeth (Kole) Petersen; and Brian Pedersen; great-grandchildren: Benjamin Todd; Megan Todd; Brennan Todd; Katelynn DeRoos; Hope DeRoos; Alex DeRoos; McKaelyn Anderson; Carter Anderson; Johnna Pick; Beau Pick; Lila Pick; special friend, Elizabeth Anderson; extended family and many friends.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents; wife; son, John Nelson; great-granddaughter, Charlie Pick; sisters: Ida Nelson, Olive Larson, and Mildred Beeghley.
