Anna Farley was the oldest of five children born to Laurence and Mary (Goff) Farley. In Ireland, the family name was still spelled Farrelly. Anna, along with her mother and her three siblings, arrived in America at the port of New York on the ship, Shannon, on July 10, 1851. Her father was not on the passenger list; but, the entire family did live together again in America.

The family first settled in Meredosia, Morgan County, Illinois, where Anna's youngest brother, Larry, was born. In about 1854 or 1855, Anna's mother passed away. Later, the family moved to the area of Freeport, Stephenson County, Illinois. Anna married James Maher in 1863.

In October of 1873, Anna and her husband came to Dakota Territory and settled in Union County. The couple had ten children.

By 1900, Anna and James Maher were both still residents of Union County, SD but were the heads of separate households. By 1907, James was living in Parkston, SD. They were reported to have divorced.

Anna was survived by James Maher and eight of her ten children. James Maher died on March 10, 1923 and was reported to have been buried in the area of Parkston, SD.
