The eldest son of Joseph and Isobel Lamont Stewart Bryan, his parents were wealthy, influential members of society. They lived in an elegant manner that included travel, recreation and first rate education. John was accidentally blinded in his right eye as a youth but remained active. He graduated from the University of Virginia and Harvard with a law degree. He practiced in New York and Richmond until 1900 when he went to work for his father's newspaper. He remained with that endeavor for his lifetime as owner and publisher. He married Anne Eliza Tennant on June 4th, 1903. Together they had one daughter and two sons. His family inherited his parents mansion "Laburnum". John Stewart Bryan was a dignified man that stood over 6'2" tall and carried himself impressively. He was a noted speaker and a leader of Richmond society. He served as vice president of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts,Chairman of the Board for Richmond public libraries and was President of the Virgina Historical Society. In 1934 he was named President of William and Mary College. He died at the Medical College of Virginia.
