Max R. Ludwig, 83 of Ripley, passed away September 24, 2017, at Charleston Memorial Hospital following a long illness.

He was born November 16, 1933 at Belmont, a son of the late Delbert and Goldie Nutt Ludwig. In 1936 his family moved to Ripley. Max was a 1951 graduate and Valedictorian of Ripley High School where he was active in all sports and achieved many honors including First Team all LKC Conference in Basketball and earned a football scholarship to West Virginia University. While at WVU Max played football all four years and was a member of the 1954 Sugar Bowl Team. He was also active member in Beta Theta Pi Social Fraternity and graduated in 1955 with a B.S Degree in Business Administration and Marketing. He was commissioned as a 2nd Leutenent in the U.S. Air Force in May of 1956 and given Top Secret Clearance in 1957. He served proudly with the 307th Bomb Wing, Lincoln, Nebraska and served Alert Duty in Newfoundland, Azores Islands, Spain and England. He was given an Honorable Discharge with the Rank of Captain. Max was the owner of the Ripley Ponderosa Restaurant.

Max is survived by two sons, Michael (Jill) Ludwig and Scott (fiancée Trisha) Ludwig; grandchildren, Tyler, Allison and Brooks; great grandchild, Jordan; and brother Bob Ludwig.

In addition to his parents, He was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Peggy in 2007; and brother Delbert Ludwig Jr.

Funeral Service will be 1 p.m. Thursday, September 28, at the Epworth United Methodist Church, Ripley with Rev. Ford Price officiating. Burial will be in the Pine Hill Cemetery, Ripley. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, at the Waybright Funeral Home, Ripley and one hour prior to the service at the church.
