According to the Beresford Centennial Book, Elizabeth "Bessie" Swift and her father left for America in 1855. However, her father was reported to have died of cholera and was buried at sea; and, Bessie arrived in America by herself at the age of seventeen. In Galena, IL, Bessie met and married James McGuire. The couple had nine children.

Bessie was survived by her husband.
