James McGuire's birth place was reported to have been only a mile and a half from Father Monsignieur Lawler's birth place in County Cavan, Ireland.

At the age of 23, James McGuire came to America and settled in Galena, IL, where he married Elizabeth "Bessie" Swift three years later. In 1871, the couple homesteaded in Emmet township, Union County, Dakota Territory. He and Bessie were the parents of nine children.

During the later part of his life, James continued to support himself financially despite poor health. He died while visiting his daughters in Ipswich, SD. His wife preceeded him in death.
