John W. Dowidat, 82, of 155 Church St., Oakfield, died Wednesday, July 18, 2001, at ManorCare in Fond du Lac.
He was born Aug. 15, 1918, in Winchester, Wis., a son of the late Rev. John and Emma Bader Dowidat.
On Oct. 15, 140, he married Estelle Leidholdt at St. Luke's Ev. Lutheran Church.
John was a World War II veteran, serving with the Army Air Corps and was a recipient of the American Theatre Ribbon Good Conduct Medal and the World War II Victory Medal.
He was formerly employed as a machinist with Romart Manufacturing of Oakfield, Wis.
John was the chief of police for the Village of Oakfield from 1956 to 1984. He was also the assistant volunteer fire chief and was a deputy for the Fond du Lac County Sheriff's Department.
John was a member of St. Luke's Evangelical Lutheran Church for over 60 years. He managed the Steiner Greenhouse of Oakfield. John and Estelle spent many happy retirement years on Lake Poygan where he enjoyed fishing.
Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Estelle; one daughter, Mary Kay Alba of Amhurst, N.Y. three sons, John L. (Bonnie) Dowidat of Oakfield, David Dowidat of North Fond du Lac and Jim (Gladys) Dowidat of Fond du Lac; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two sisters, Dolly (Mel) Damrow of Montana and Mary Jane (Howard) Weger of Iowa; and nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by one granddaughter, Julie Dowidat; his parents, one brother and six sisters.
Services: Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, July 21, 2001, at St. Luke's Evangelical Lutheran Church, 245 S. Second St., Oakfield, with the Rev. Robert Bitter officiating. Burial will be at Avoca Cemetery. Full military services will be conducted by Trier Puddy American Legion Post 75.
Visitation: Visitation will be held at the church from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, July 20, and again from noon Saturday until the time of the services.
