Per Gerald Findley , dated 12.1.1996: Written by Delores Findley Griffin. "I wish to speak on the matter of Zeddick Barber's death - on the morning of his death, Zeddick Barber came to the breakfast table, ate a hearty meal. Then he said "I am going to die today." My father and I went to Springfield (Colorado) for the doctor. I was very young. When we arrived back at the ranch, Zeddick had passed away.
Those who were there were, Roy W. Findley Sr., Annabel Findley, Roy Findley Jr., Lealand Findley and Delores Findley. There was no tomaine poisoning. as I said, he ate a hearty breakfast.
He had not been well and it was my duty to stay at his bedside. He was dearly loved. He was taken to Springfield by mortuary car. Placed in a casket and Roy W. Findley Sr. and Annabel Findley took the casket with body in the back of pickup to Oklahoma for burial.
I remember this because seeing them leave with casket was so sad to bear. And then the fact that Roy Jr. Findley, Lealand Findley and myself were left to take care of the ranch while they were gone. We were just little kids."
Death Announcement:
Z.G. Barber, Hopeton man died in Springfield, Colorado at Findley Ranch. Mr. Barber, a native of Cincinnati, Ohio, came to Woods County in 1898. Settled south of Hopeton he was 82 at the time pf his death
March 12, 1998, Story related by Charmion Herr Campbell: Grandpa Barber raised red polled cattle - registered ones. One of the early ranchers to do so. They also had the first gas lights. A real improvement over coal oil lamps. The gas was carbide and was quite dangerous to mix. The tank was buried quickly and covered as quickly as possible. Real exciting to watch. Ha!
