Son of Michael Finley and Mary Waugh born in Adams county, Pennsylvania. Moved to Wilkes county ca1804 where he purchased land. Was at times a merchant, farmer, dealer in real estate, tanner, county justice, school trustee and hotel owner. Most noted for a chain(in partnership with others) of general stores then in both North, South Carolina, Tennessee and Alabama. War of 1812 service is on record although rank of Major has not yet been documented.
