Barbara was born in 1817 or 1818. According to the Beresford Centennial Book, Barbara was born in Prussia, a short distance from the city of Berlin. At the age of 32, she was reported to have come with her husband, John Cooper, to America in 1850. She and her husband were reported to have spent their first two years at Galena, IL before moving to Sugar Creek, IA. In 1872, the couple moved to Union County, Dakota Territory and homesteaded in Emmet Township.
Barbara and her husband were known to have had four children. They were Anthony Cooper, Regina Lass, Barbara Maher, and Catherine Conrad. Barbara died at the age of 84 and was preceeded in death by her husband, John, and was survived by her four children.
