MARGARET COWLES

Margaret Olive Cowles, 81, of 144 Putnam St., Oakfield, died Friday, July 24, 1992, at St. Agnes Hospital.

She was born Sept. 26, 1910, in South Byron, a daughter of Sidney and Maude Samson Bird. On Dec. 24, 1929, she married Leslie H. Cowles Sr. at South Byron.

Mrs. Cowles was a graduate of Oakfield High School and attended Fond du Lac Normal School for one year. She taught school at South Byron and assister her husband in his insurance business.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church of Oakfield and the United Methodist Women, the Order of the Eastern Star, the Oakfield Senior Center and the AARP. She was a charter member of the Fond du Lac Residential Services and an honorary member of the Oakfield Fie Department Auxiliary. She served on the Oakfield Library Board and as historian of the Village of Oakfield. She was active in volunteer services at the Fond du Lac Health Care Center for more than 20 years and received the Community Council's Human Concern Award for 1975 and the Fond du Lac County Outstanding Senior Citizen Award in 1984. She was active in many other community organizations and affairs.

Survivors include her husband; one son, Leslie H. Jr and his wife Kathie of Fond du Lac; one daughter, Sydney Margaret Henke and her husband tom of Oakfield; 10 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; four brothers, Bennett Bird and his wife Ethe of Oshkosh, Sidney Bird of Bradenton, Fla., Robert A. Bird and his wife Nellie of Brownsville, and Norris Bird and his wife Mary Ann of Fond du Lac; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Florence Panetti and Mary Steiner; and two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Sidney Bird and Mrs Grace Backhaus.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the United Methodist Church of Oakfield. The Rev. Joyce Rinehart will officiate, with burial following in Avoca Cemetery, Oakfield.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Kohls Funeral Home, Oakfield, and Monday from 12:30 p.m. until the time of services at the church. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund in her name has been established.
