Norris Bird of 21 Concord Drive, Fond du Lac, died on Thursday, March 23, 2006, at St. Agnes Hospital at the age of 92.

Norris was born on May 9, 1913, in South Byron, a son of Sidney Herbert and Maude Abigail (Sampson) Bird.

On Sept. 21, 1935, he married Mary Ann Timm at St. Patrick Church, Fond du Lac. In 2005 Norris and Mary Ann Celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary.

After graduating from Oakfield High School in 1929, Norris joined his father on the family farm in South Byron. He farmed there until he retired. After dairy farming, Norris was a salesman for Pioneer Seed Products and operated a custom spraying business in partnership with Joseph Roblee.

Norris was a lifelong member and leader in the South Byron Grange. He was also active in the National Holstein Association and was the South Byron 4-H diary leader for many years. Norris also served on the South Byron School Board for 13 years until consolidation, and then served for three years on the Lomira School Board. He also found time to serve as district census supervisor, sold Federal Crop Insurance and was in charge of Red Cross drives in South Byron. While living in South Byron, Norris was a member of St. John Catholic Church in Byron where he served as first council president and chaired charity drives.

Norris had a beautiful tenor voice and sang in the church choir and for many weddings and funerals. He was also a member of the South Byron Grange Quartet, the “Country Gentlemen.”

After moving to Fond du Lac, he and Mary Ann joined St. Mary Church, now Holy Family Parish. In recent years, Norris continued his skills at cribbage and sheephead, and by organizing card games at the Fond du Lac Senior Center.

Survivors include Mary Ann, his wife of nearly 71 years; five sons, Michael of Oshkosh, John (Barbara)of Black Earth, Wis., Stephen (Sandra) of Tallahassee, Fla., Philip (LuAnn) of Oshkosh and Joseph of Fond du Lac; two daughters, Margaret (Stephen) McCullough of Mount Calvary and Meidana (Rajiam) Pursifull of Portland, Ore.; 13 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents and parents-in-law; his three brothers and their wives, Bennet and Ethel, Sidney and Beryl, Robert and Nellie; three sisters and their husbands, Mary and Herbert Steiner, Margaret and Lester Cowles and Florence and Paul Panetti; one daughter, Elizabeth Ann Bird; and one grandson, Adam Joseph McCullough.

Services: A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Monday, March 27, 2006, at Holy Family Parish, St. Mary’s Church. The Rev. Patrick Heppe will preside. Burial will be at St. John Cemetery in Byron.

Visitation: Visitation will be held from 2 to 6 p.m. on Sunday, March 26, 2006, at Zacherl Funeral Home and from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. on Monday at the funeral home.
