Joseph E. Hill, 86, of Owens Cross Roads, Alabama, passed away Tuesday, March 15, 2011.
Joe was drafted August 29, 1944, and attended basic training at Fort McClellan. His military occupation specialty was rifleman 745 and he qualified on a 30-caliber machine gun and an M-1 grand rifle. He was deployed to the Rhineland Central European Command with Company E, 101st Infantry Battalion, 26th Division 3rd Army. He served until July 9, 1946. He was awarded the EAME Service medal with two bronze stars, the good conduct medal, the World War II Victory medal, and the European Occupation medal. His highest rank achieved was sergeant. Joe retired from NASA in 1980.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Catherine Lois Hill; two sons-in-law, Roger Savoier and Bobby Taymon; four brothers and five sisters.
Surviving are daughters, Brenda and husband Butch Holland of Owens Cross Roads, Barbara Taymon of Owens Cross Roads, Sandra Savoie of Round Rock, Texas, Martha and husband Jeff DeArmond of Owens Cross Roads, and Lisa and husband Barry Laffew of Georgetown, Texas; sons, Larry and wife Jackie Hill of Owens Cross Roads, Rayburn and wife Joy Hill of Dallas, Ga., Ross and wife Trena Hill of Owens Cross Roads, and Leland and wife Deborah Hill of Somerville; 17 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews; and special friend, Ruth Halmark.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the New Hope Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Doug Browner officiating. Interment will follow in Moon Cemetery with military honors.
