"History of Gilliam Crawford Nelson Families", page 1, shared by Nancy Phillips 12 May 2016:

In June 1844, a wagon train left Missouri for Oregon. At this time, Oregon was claimed by England and not yet a territory. Among the pioneers were Margaret (Crawford) Nelson, the wife of George Stephen Nelson and Mary Elizabeth (Crawford) Gilliam, the wife of Col. Cornelius Gilliam. These ladies were orphaned sisters, reared in the home of MARY POTEET, the sister of Elijah Smith.

"History of Clay County" (Missouri), found on page 280:

The first settlers in (now) Liberty Township were two sons and two sons-in-law of Samuel Gilmore. In the spring of 1820, they left their families down in the Petite Osage bottom, a/k/a Tete Saw, in Saline County, and three of the four settled in the southeastern part of Liberty township on Rush Creek. Richard Hill settled on section 9, about 2 miles east of Liberty, once the town was founded. They built their homes and put in some crops. Their families joined them in the fall, along with the Samuel Gilmore household.

Samuel Gilmore was the father of Robert and James, and the father-in-law of Richard Hill and Elijah Smith. MRS. MARY POTEET, a widow lady, was the sister of Elijah Smith, and the mother-in-law of James and Robert Gilmore. MARY POTEET came with these people and made her home with her brother. She raised Mary Crawford, an orphan, who married Cornelius Gilliam and was the first white woman married in Clay County (Missouri).
Mary "Polly" SMITH was born about 1776 in Rowan Co, North Carolina. She married Samuel POTEET probably in Virginia in the late 1780s. He died relatively young in 1808 and married raised a family of at least eight children possibly ten children alone. I have that she died in 1856 in Lee Co, Virginia but I suspect that she probably moved with her family west to Missouri.
