Educator, Mine Operator Dies at 76 in S.L. Home

A. Royal W. Hintze, 76, Utah educator and mine operator died Saturday at 5:20 p.m. in the family home, 162 8th East, after a lingering illness.

He was born Dec. 10, 1880, in Holladay, a son of Ferdinand F. and Matilda Wall Hintze. He was educated in Big Cottonwood schools, the University of Utah Preparatory School and the University of Utah, from which he was graduated in 1908 with the degree of Bachelor of Arts.

He married Jessie Sears Aug. 14, 1907 in the Salt Lake Temple, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

He later became principal of the Eureka High School, and subsequently was principal of the LDS Maori College in New Zealand.

Mr. Hintze operated the Royal Ute mine at Lakeside, Tooele County, for many years. He was an active member of the LDS Church.

He is survived by his widow, a daughter, Mrs. Mildred H. Nelson, Kennewick, Wash.; a son, Royal Sears Hintze, faculty member at Brigham Young University; seven grandchildren, and two sisters and 14 brothers: Mrs. Abbie Florence, Holladay; Ruth Mackay, Riverton; Ferdinand F. Hintze, professor emeritus of the U. of U.; Alvin B., Spokane; Aaron B. and Paul, Salt Lake City; Henry H., Riverton; Leslie, Heleman F. and Glenn J. Hintze, Holladay; Joseph F., American Fork; Andrew F., Melvin M. and Shirley Hintze, Mackay, Idaho; Norman, Jerome, Idaho; Vaughn Hintze, Nampa, Idaho.
