George L. Hoover, the father of Mrs. C. H, Whitesell and Mrs. D. E. Arrowsmith, of Bloomington, and one of Arrowsmith's most highly respected citizens, died at Ashley, Ill., Saturday evening, following a lingering illness with cancer of the throat.
George L. Hoover was born August 20, 1832, in Virginia and was the second son of Abram and Rebecca Hoover. He was married back in his native state to Miss Susan A. Bane on December 22, 1852. To this union the following children were born, all of whom are living: Mrs. B. J. Thrush, of Arrowsmith; Mrs. D. E. Arrowsmith and Mrs. C. H. Whitesell, both of Bloomington, and Mrs. M. C. Banks, of Grand Forks, N. D.
Mr. Hoover received a common school education and with the aid of this and persistent reading he gained a great fund of know ledge which in later years proved to be of great value to him. In 1857 he moved to Illinois and located in Ellsworth, where he built the first log cabin. In one room of this structure he fitted up a school and taught those seeking the rudiments of knowledge for many miles around. He is said to be the first school teacher in this part of the county.
At an early age he united with the M. E. Church of which he has been a constant and consistent member. He was noted for his upright Christian principals of living and had during his life organized several Sunday schools and for many years was superintendent and class leader of the Methodist Church in Arrowsmith. Mr. Hoover was also of an inventive turn of mind and is said to have invented the first riding cultivator used in Illinois. This was in 1858 and since that time he has added many other inventions to this.
He was generous hearted, of a kind disposition and honored by all who knew him.
