Ernest Nelson Higgins Sr., 102, of Galesburg, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, March 13, 2011, at his daughter's home. He was born Nov. 28, 1908, in Fulton County, the son of Jessie Madonna (Beers) and Charles Meredith Higgins.

He married Mary Elizabeth (Gustine) on March 30, 1930, in Indiana. She preceded him in death on Sept. 25, 1998. He married Wanda L (Schrodt) Mills on July 30, 1960, in Galesburg. She preceded him in death on Nov. 9, 2010.

He graduated from Canton High School and attended college in Rolla, MO.

He was a farmer in Fulton County and moved to Chicago in the 1930s where he was a store manager for A&P Tea Co. During World War II, he spent two years working for Douglas Aircraft, after which he moved to Galesburg and participated in the construction of Mayo Hospital. Then he was employed by Golden Cream Dairy. In 1945 he opened Higgins Dairy, which was in business until 1972. He then worked for Ron's Super Valu and Mel's Red and White in Knoxville. In 1986, he went to work for Hy-Vee in Galesburg where he remained until October 2010.

Most recently, he was a member of Bethany Baptist Church. He was a member of Pacific Masonic Lodge 66, AF&AM of Knoxville for over 50 years. He was also a member of the Moline Consistory and Mohammed Temple Shrine. He was a former member of the Galesburg Kiwanis, Galesburg Cosmopolitans and Knoxville Kiwanis.

He was preceded in death by: his parents; two brothers, Howard and Paul; and a son-in-law, Ronald Lawson.

Surviving are: his sons: Ernest (Margaret) Higgins Jr. of Mountain Home, AR; Dan (Roberta) Higgins of Galesburg; and Howard (Debra) Higgins of Chatham; his daughters: Alice Jane Lawson of Monmouth and Debora (Mark) Hessler of Galesburg; step-daughter, Victoria (Roger) Zezulka of Lake Wales, FL; 10 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; eight step-grandchildren; eight step-great-grandchildren; two step-great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Doris Painter, of Las Vegas, NV.
