Shelton Mason County Journal, May 27, 2004: "Former Shelton resident Flora Jean Burfiend died of cancer of April 30 at Roo-Lan Healthcare Center in Lacey. She was 70 and a resident of Olympia.
She was born October 30, 1933 inShelton to Sada and Howard McIntosh. Her parents divorced soon after her birth and her mother later married Marion Eveleth, a farmer.
The Eveleths purchased Mason County's 40 acre "poor farm" located in the Isabella Valley prior to World War II. The family also owned landin the Bucks Prairie area where they moved soon after the war.
She attended Lincoln Grade School and Shelton Junior High School until the eighth grade when Shelton and Elma adjusted their school boundaries. She graduated from Elma High School in 1951.
She was the great-granddaughter of Edwin Johnson, an early settler in the Kamilche area and one of the first landowners in the platted town of Shelton. Her great-uncle, Wallace Johnson, founded the Ford Garage in Shelton.
She married and later divorced Murel Blunk. She then married Eugene Burfiend and thereafter made her home in Olympia.
Mrs. Burfiend was fond of music. She was a flutist through high school, played violin and harp and was an advocate of musical education for her children. She was also an avid antique collector, a gardener and enjoyed a lifelong interest in oil painting. She took great pleasure in her children and grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her father and stepfather, brother Keith Eveleth and daughter Bernadette Ann Burfiend.
Surviving are her husband, Eugene Burfiend of Olympia; mother Sada Evelethof Shelton; daughter Mary Kildal of Olympia; sons Jean-Paul and Maurice Burfiend of Olympia; brothers Donald Eveleth of McCleary and Norman and Paul Eveleth of Shelton; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Services were held on May 19 at Saint Michael's Catholic Church in Olympia. Inurnment was at Calvary Cemetery in Tumwater.
