Alexander was born in Newburyport, but moved with his father Henry Poor (1769-1853) and his step-mother Martha (Loring) Poor to Boston in 1823. Alexander lived on Church Street in Boston, and many residences along the Roxbury and Southend neighborhoods. He married 28 January 1844 at the Pitts Street Chapel, Boston, Mass. by Rev. Robert C. Waterston to Ann Whitney Phagins (1828-1886). He was a paperhanger by trade. Alexander died after drowning in the Charles River in Boston, Mass.
