Christmas of 1899 Lester Pearl received a gold pocket watch as a Christmas gift from her parents George Washington Killian & Palestine Mackey Killian. This momento represented a precious memory in her otherwise difficult life and she gave it to my grandfather who later told me the story and gave it to me.

She married Van Slaughter Clayton in Dekalb, Co. Alabama on 16 Jul 1901. Dovie Pearl Clayton was born in 1902. The young family moved to Texas between 1902-1905. She lived in Sidney, Texas in 1905 where Tom Lacy Clayton, was born. She later moved to Commanche, Texas where George Robert "Boss" Clayton was born. Sometime between 1905-1907 she made a Lone Star Quilt for my grandfather, Tom Lacy Clayton, which he gave me before he died. She was often left alone, running the Texas farm by herself, while he was on the road as a traveling peddler. Around 1915 she left Van Slaughter, a difficult man, and moved herself and the children back to Dekalb Co., Alabama.

She died in 1918 just under a year after the tragic loss of her only daughter.

Her influence created a special place in the hearts of her two remaining sons who also experienced a great deal of hardship and grieved her loss for the rest of their lives.
