Dr. Howard "Hank" Webster Allen of Charlottesville, Virginia, departed this life on Friday, June 22, 2012.

He was born in 1919 in Dolphin, Virginia, the son of the late Thomas and Fleda Green Allen. He was a graduate of Dwight Morrow High School in Englewood, New Jersey, where he was an outstanding athlete. In pursuit of higher learning, he received degrees from Hampton (Institute) University, New York University and a Doctorate in Education from the University of Virginia in 1973. Dr. Allen's professional career began at John M. Langston High School in Danville, Virginia, as a teacher and a coach of basketball and baseball as well as an assistant football coach. His teams became a powerhouse within the state of Virginia and won numerous district and state titles during his tenure from 1952 until 1969. In 1969, the University of Virginia recruited Dr. Allen to join the staff of the Consultative Resource Center (CRC). The CRC assisted school administrators, educators and students during the delicate transition from segregated to desegregated schools for over a decade. He served as one of the center's directors from 1973 until the closure of the center. He then became an assistant professor in the Curry School of Education and headed the efforts for teacher certification until his retirement in 1986. An avid golfer and swimmer, Hank continued swimming until the age of 89. He was a stanch supporter of University of Virginia sports. He was honored in 2011 by the renaming of the Langston High School gymnasium on his behalf. Dr. Allen has received numerous accolades and awards from the Danville and Charlottesville communities. He was a lifetime member of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity and a 50 year member of Jefferson Lodge #20 F.A.M., Inc.. Married for over sixty years to the late Ruth Fields Allen, he leaves to cherish his memory his devoted daughter, Dr. Barbara P. Jackson; grandchildren, James A. Jackson II, Denise Watson and Demenica Jackson; great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild, all of Las Vegas, Nevada; as well as a host of nephews, nieces, a godson, cousins and dear friends. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, June 28, 2012, at Mount Zion First African Baptist Church, 105 Lankford Avenue, with Dr. Alvin Edwards officiating. Interment will follow at Holly Memorial Gardens. A family hour will be held at Mount Zion First African Baptist Church from 6Z:30 until 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 27, 2012, followed by the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity's Omega service. (Obituary, J. F.
