Ruth Jackson Kyle, 97, of Salem, passed quietly away on Wednesday night, March 9, 2011, at Richfield Nursing Center in Salem. She was born January 26, 1914 to Elkana and Mary Lizze Jackson. Preceding her in death was her husband, Joseph H. Kyle Jr. and a daughter, Joyce Kyle Saunders. She was a life long resident of Salem, attending the old Roanoke County (Salem) Training School. Ruth was an excellent cook and served in the cafeterias of Andrew Lewis and Salem High Schools. First Baptist Church of Salem was her love, having joined at an early age. She was a member of the Adult Sunday School Class and the Carey-Pitt Missionary Society. She is survived by a daughter, Barbara (Willie) Waker; son, Dr. Joseph H. Kyle; nephew whom she raised, John (Rachel) Meldrum; granddaughters, Michelle (Scott) Wilder, Cheryl Lynn Kyle, both of Richmond, Cherie (Dorrell) Parkins, of Virginia Beach and Nadine (Walter) Burnett, of Roanoke; sister-in-law, Gertrude G. Kyle; nieces, Jane (Arthur) Preston and Alice Ruth Kyle; and a host of great-grandchildren, cousins, other relatives and friends. Special thanks to the staff of Richfield Nursing Center for their patience and constant care. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 16, 2011, in the Hamlar-Curtis Chapel, with the Rev. Melton Johnson officiating. Interment will be in Williams Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, March 15, 2011, at Hamlar-Curtis Funeral Home. Published in Roanoke Times from March 13 to March 15, 2011
