"Joe" as he was affectionately called by family and friends, graduated from G.W. Carver High School in Salem, VA, in 1952. He went on to receive his Bachelor of Science degree from North Carolina A&T State University in Greensboro, with a double major in Physical Education and Social Studies. Then, in 1965, he earned a master's degree in education at the University of Virginia with majors in Guidance and Administration. Continuing his quest for knowledge, in 1976, he received a doctorate degree in Education from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University with majors in Guidance and Counseling and a cognate in Statistics.
Professionally he was a teacher, football and basketball coach, Assistant Principal at Carver and served as a Guidance Counselor. He was named Director of Testing and Federal Programs in 1988, a position held until retirement in June of 1996.
Joe was an active participant in many social and civic organizations where he served as an officer and member. He was a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity.
Dr. Kyle was an active member of First Baptist Church, Salem, VA all of his life. He served as Chairman of the Deacon Board,a Trustee, financial secretary, member of the senior choir, Sunday School teacher and Director of Religious Education.
Joe was preceded in death by his father Joseph Kyle Jr.; mother, Ruth Jackson Kyle and sister, Joyce Saunders. Joe was married to the late Barbara Seymour. He is survived by his daughters, Ms. Cheryl Kyle, of Richmond, Ms. Michelle Wilder, of Richmond, Mrs. Nadine Burnett, of Roanoke and Ms. Cherie Parkin, of Va. Beach; four grandchildren, Jazmine Wilder, DeShaun Parkin, Javon Parkin and Jayla Wilder; a sister, Barbara Waker (Willie) and a host of aunts, cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Friday, November 23, 2012, at First Baptist Church, Salem with the Rev. Melton W. Johnson officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the funeral service. Interment will be in Williams Memorial Park. Friends may call on Friday morning for viewing at Hamlar-Curtis Funeral Home.
