JOHN C. PADGETT
FRANKFORT, KY. ~~ John Clarence Padgett, 83, husband of Roberta Peak Padgett, died of kidney failure in the early morning hours of Monday, August 27, 2007, at the Hospice of the Bluegrass wing of St. Joseph's Hospital in Lexington, Kentucky.
Born on a farm along Wades Creek of the Clarks River in Hardin, Kentucky, Marshall County, on November 14, 1923, he was the son of Clarence L. Padgett and Genella Dunn. Mr. Padgett was a longtime member of the First United Methodist Church in Frankfort and retired in 1989 after 26 years with the Kentucky Department of Education.
At six feet, six inches, Mr. Padgett was a basketball prodigy leading the Hardin High School Eagles 1940-1941 team (41-1-0) to the final four of the state championship losing by one point in the semi-finals to eventual champion Inez.
He attended Murray State University on a basketball scholarship but his career was interrupted from 1943 to 1945 by his service in World War II. He played one year of ball in a professional league following his 1948 graduation from MSU with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Physical Education and Social Studies.
During the war,
Mr. Padgett served with the U.S. Army 45th Infantry Division in five separate theaters of operation (Naples-Foggia, Rome-Arno, Rhineland, Southern France, and Central Europe). He was awarded the Bronze Star for gallantry during the Italy campaign where he participated in the battle of Anzio.
Following the war, he married Roberta Lee Peak on June 24, 1949 and moved to Frankfort. He taught at Frankfort High School and coached the Panthers boy's basketball team from 1949 to 1953. In 1953, he returned to western Kentucky, accepting a job with the Atomic Energy Commission at the Paducah gaseous diffusion nuclear energy facility.
Mr. Padgett returned to Frankfort a final time in 1963 working a brief time for Investor's Heritage Life Insurance. He began his career with the Department of Education the same year and earned a Masters of Arts degree in Education from Murray in 1969.
He was active in many groups and organizations throughout his life including the Boy Scouts of America, Franklin County High School Quarterback Club, West Frankfort Optimists, and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4075 (Frankfort).
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother Tom Padgett. He is survived by his wife; two sisters, Margaret Perry of Benton and Mildred Browning of Frankfort; three sons, David Lee of Bloomington, Indiana, John Michael of Lawrenceville, New Jersey, and Robert Brent of Frankfort; five grandchildren, Brian Padgett in Japan, Jennifer Fairee of Chatham, New Jersey, Justin Padgett of Louisville, Alyssa Padgett of Louisville, and Laura Danton of Savannah, Georgia; and two great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, August 29, 2007 at Rogers Funeral Home in Frankfort. Funeral Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday, August 30, 2007 at Rogers. Burial will follow at the Frankfort Cemetery with VFW Post #4075 conducting military honors. Memorials are suggested to Hospice of the
