Susie Pemberton Chilton Times February 27, 1909

Miss Susie Pemberton, a young woman employed at St. Elizabeth's hospital, died there at an early hour, Friday morning. Her death resulted from infection setting in her right hand, which had been torn in the mangle in the hospital laundry Tuesday afternoon.
Miss Pemberton was 22 years of age and her home was near Chilton. The remains will be sent there for burial. Her aunt, Mrs. Kees, came to Appleton last night in response to a telegram announcing the critical condition of her niece. The young woman had been at the hospital for quite a while, but had returned to Chilton. Two months ago she returned to the hospital. She contemplated joining the sisterhood to which the hospital nurses belong and would have begun her novitiate next fall.
The accident occurred while Miss Pemberton and one of the sisters were operating the mangle in the laundry. A physician who happened to be in the building at that time immediately dressed the hand, which was torn in a terrible manner and scalded by the hot water. Despite the closest medical attention and most careful nursing the mangled hand failed to improve and last night it was decided to amputate the member, as a lost resource in endeavoring to save the young woman's life. However, the infection which had set in made even this means futile.
The tragic death of the young woman, who had expressed her intention of devoting her life to the care of the sick, and who was already regarded by the sisters as one of their own, has plunged the hospital into grief. The Mother Superior, whose health was impaired, is not at home at the present time and it is feared that the news of the young woman's death will destroy any benefits which the sister might have secured from her rest and further imperil her health.
The remains were brought to this city on Friday and conveyed to the home of her parents in the town of Brothertown. The funeral took place on Sunday afternoon with interment in the Brothertown cemetery. The deceased was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. O. Pemberton. She was born in the town of Brothertown Dec. 4, 1886. She attended the common school for a number of years and upon the completion of her school work taught school a short time. She was of cheerful disposition and made friends with everybody. The bereft relatives have the sympathy of all in their bereavement
