Married Eloise Burfoot on May 20, 1851, father of Julia, Kate, Adalaid, Ellen and Charles.

Member of Domestic Missionary Board of Richmond and Richmond Male Orphan Society.In the 1850's he worked at the State Library as an assistant at the State Capitol,including assistant to the secretary of the Commonwealth.

Served in the Civil War in both the 1st Battalion,Virginia State Reserves,Company F and the 34 Infantry during September 1863 he was wounded in the arm which was amputated.
