Graveside services for George R. Evans, 72, of Conway, North Carolina, were held Saturday, April 29, at 11 o'clock in the Brownwood Cemetery. The Rev. M.C. Ferguson officiated. Mr. Evans died following a heart attack April 26, in Duke University Hospital.
Mr. Evans was born in Sandersville, son of the late Judge Beverly Evans and Virginia Irwin Evans. He was a brother of the late Judge Irwin L. Evans of Sandersville. A retired teacher, he was a member of the Conway First Baptist Church and for many years taught the Adult Fellowship Class. Mr. Evans was a graduate of the University of North Carolina. He was a member of the faculty of the University of North Carolina before moving to Barnwell, S.C., where he taught for several years. He then moved to Conway where he taught until his health failed. In appreciation for his dedicated service to the school of Conway, the school gymnasium was named in his honor.
Survivors are his wife, the former Miss Lula Belle Self of Conway, N.C.; one daughter, Mrs. John (Lureese) Kapp of Memphis, Tenn.; two grandchildren, Paul and Camille Kapp; one sister-in-law, Mrs. Irwin L. Evans of Sandersville.
Mayo Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements with interment in Brownwood Cemetery.
