Carl S. Rasmussen, 85, of Hamilton, passed away Friday, Feb. 18, 2011, at the Marcus Daly Hospice and Palliative Care Center.

He was born Dec. 1, 1925, in Long Beach, Calif., the son of Peter and Elsie (Nielsen) Rasmussen.

Carl was raised and educated in Long Beach.

After high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy on June 16, 1943. Carl served on the USS Birmingham until he was wounded in action in October 1944 in the Battle of Leyte Gulf. After receiving a Purple Heart, Carl was honorably discharged on Nov. 23, 1945. Carl married Shirley A. Hedges on Jan. 28, 1953, in Long Beach. He worked for Wonder Bread for many years.

Carl was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Pete Rasmussen; and two sisters, Dorothy Stiner and Esther Kimball.

He is survived by his loving wife, Shirley Rasmussen of Hamilton; four children, Bill Rasmussen of Hamilton, Betsy Matthew of Anaheim, Calif., Bob Rasmussen of Laguna Niguel, Calif., and Diane Walden of Aberdeen, Scotland; one sister, Ellen Zaffke of California; five granddaughters; five grandsons; two great-granddaughters; and two great-grandsons.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 23, at the Corvallis United Methodist Church, with burial to follow at Riverview Cemetery in Hamilton, with military honors. There will be a reception after the committal service at the church.

The family suggests that memorials be made in Carl's name to the Corvallis United Methodist Church, 356 Cemetery Road, Corvallis, MT 59828; or the Marcus Daly Hospice and Palliative Care Center, 1200 Westwood Drive, Hamilton, MT 59840.

The family would like to thank Pastor Mick Gray and the congregation of the Corvallis United Methodist Church for their caring support, and Marcus Daly Hospital and Hospice for the top-notch loving care Carl received.
