At the age of 17, on June 17, 1949, Phyllis was introduced to a young man, Lee Edward Bales. In August of 1952, Lee was transferred to the Dominican Republic where they resided until November when they moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma. Shortly after their move to Tulsa, Phyllis gained employment with Tulsa Winch where she worked for several years. Phyllis and Lee returned to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in March of 1956 where they continued to reside until 1960 when they returned to Tulsa, Oklahoma.
