BROOKLET - William D. "Bill" Franklin, 88, formerly of Statesboro, died Tuesday, November 28, at his home in Brooklet. A Bulloch County native, Mr. Franklin will be remembered as the owner of Franklin's Nursery, both for his outstanding roses and camellias, as well as landscape designs and installations at hundreds of local homes, churches, parks, governmental buildings and businesses. He was a charter member of the Statesboro Kiwanis Club and one of the organizers of the original Ogeechee Fair. He was a member of the Statesboro Primitive Baptist Church and a veteran of World War II, serving in Europe, North Africa and the Pacific. In his retirement, Mr. Franklin created and donated many canes and walking sticks to area nursing home residents; wooden toys and miniature outhouses, just for fun; and birdhouses, duck boxes and bird feeders to individuals and the GSU Botanical Garden. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph W. and Bertha Donaldson Franklin; first wife, Mary Altman Franklin; and a granddaughter, Marianna Wood.

He is survived by his wife, Ouida Wyatt Ingram Franklin; four children, Donna Johnson of Ann Arbor, Mich., Caroline (Rick) Montgomery of North Augusta, S.C., Mandy Franklin of Statesboro and Joe (Debi) Franklin, also of Statesboro; three stepdaughters, Sherry Ingram of Savannah, Rebecca (Chuck) Dinsmore of Hendersonville, N.C., and Debbie Ingram of Williston, Vt.: 10 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. He is also survived by two sisters, Daisy Cook of Savannah and Nita Denmark of Waycross; many nieces and nephews and three special grandchildren, Joanna, Susan and Anne Rozario.

The funeral service will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Hodges-Moore Funeral Home with Elder Randy Waters and Elder Bill Durrence officiating. Burial will be in Eastside Cemetery.

The family wishes to thank Mary Williams, Mamie Humphries, Helen Kirkland, Mamie Jenkins and Cynthia Busby for their loving and dedicated care.
