Statesboro - J. Shields Kenan, 84, died Aug. 18 at Georgia War Veterans Home in Augusta. The native of Statesboro was a graduate of South Georgia College (Georgia Southern University) and was active in business and community affairs in Statesboro for more than 40 years.

He was the founding president of the Bulloch County Historical Society and was a former president of the Statesboro Rotary Club, a Paul Harris and a Will Watt Fellow and was the compiler and editor of the club's Fifty Year History published in 1986. As a young man he joined the Army during the early days of World War II through the mobilization of the local National Guard. A subsequent mobilization of the local unit during the Korean War insured his military retirement for length of service in the grade of Lt. Col.

He was engaged locally in the Commercial Printing and Stationery Business and for more than ten years was editor and publisher of the Bulloch Times, a local weekly newspaper. He was a member of Statesboro First United Methodist Church and former chairman of its official board as well as a lay speaker in the area. He was also an associate lay leader of the Savannah District of the Methodist Church. Active in the Boy Scouts, he served as Chairman of the Canoochee District of the Boy Scouts of America. He also served as a long time commissioner of the Statesboro Housing Authority. In 1992, he was a recipient of the Deen Day Smith award in recognition of "Unselfish Service to Mankind in Bulloch County".

SURVIVORS: his wife, Julia Trapnell Kenan of Statesboro; two sons, James S. Kenan of Brooklet and Gregory Kenan of Wilmington, N.C.; two daughters, Carolyn Bryant of Atlanta and Sharon Harvell of Wilmington, N.C.; two stepdaughters, Lynn Latimer and Ellen Clements, both of Augusta; 14 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

FUNERAL: 2:30 p.m. Monday at Statesboro First United Methodist Church, burial in Eastside Cemetery.
