The first found reference of Olive Lucinda Vassar is the 1880 U.S. Census in Cloverdale, Sonoma County, California in the household of 67 year-old Elizabeth Johns. She was born the daughter of William J. Vassar and Leamoiza Rogers, both of Missouri. She was the third of eleven children.

Marriage to Orlando is contingent on resolution of "John" on this and daughter Dolly's grave marker.

Olive is shown as the mother of James in Hopland, California, 1896, and living south of there in Cloverdale by 1904. In the 1920 U.S. Census, she is found widowed with Lilas and Aletha/Dolly in Richmond, California. She continues there with Dolly through 1930.
The children of (John) Orlando and Olive were:
James Mervyn Lea b. Dec 12, 1894 Hopland, CA m. Mary Emily Hornby; dau. Ledo Mary May 6, 1935 Texas m. P.F. Whitfield 1975)
Hazel Lea Smith b. 1896
Raymond Lea b. 1901
Dolly/Aletha E. Lea b. 1906
Lilas Lea 8

Any known explanation of the name John preceding Orlando would be very welcome. It is being assumed it has something to do with Elizabeth Johns.
