In 1845 Ransom Montgomery, a Negro Slave saved the Western & Atlantic railroad bridge that crossed the Chattahoochee River (near Atlanta) from destruction by fire. Because of this in December 1849 by an act of the Georgia State Legislature he was purchased from Hugh Brown Montogmery.
After Ransom was purchased he was put to work on the Western & Atlantic Railroad, which was owned by the State of Georgia.
