James married Mary McBride in October of 1863 and enlisted 3 months later, 11 January 1864 as a private in the 66th Regiment W.S.W. Illinois Volunteers. He signed his name as J. W. St Clair and was to always use that spelling. According to James' Volunteer Enlistment, he had "blue eyes, red hair, sandy complexion, and was 5 feet 11 1/2 inches high."
He received a flesh wound on his left thigh from a cannon ball during the Resaca, GA battle, 15 May 1864.
James died of gangrene the 11th of July, in a Louisville, KY military hospital. Although his military papers indicate he was to be buried in the Louisville, Cave Hill National Cemetery, there is a stone for him in this cemetery.
His son, James Alexander Sinclair, was born posthumously, 13 Oct 1864 in Macoupin Co.
