He ran away from home at age nine when he was living in Wheeling, WV. He worked in a theater cleaning up after shows. When he was older he also had a feeling to go home and did to find his father dead at his wake at the house. He had left because he was mad at his dad.

He was a milkman and Emily Carr ran a grocery store she owned. He was running the numbers for the mafia in Chicago during the Capone days and when the heat was on, they moved to L.A. around 1935.
