US Senator, Presidential Cabinet Member. He admitted to the bar in 1821 and commenced the practice of law in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. In 1835, he was elected as a Democrat to the United States Senate, serving until 1845. He was appointed Secretary of the Treasury in the Cabinet of President James K. Polk in 1845 and served until 1849, when he resigned to resume legal practice.
