Thomas Hicken Is Laid To Rest

RAYMOND— (HNS) — Funeral services for the late Thomas E. Hicken of Raymond were held on Thurdsay in the First Ward L.D.S. Chapel. Bishop C. R. Wing took charge of the service.

The choir sang "Oh My Father" for the opening number. Jas. S. Anderson offered the prayer, which was followed by another choir number, "Oh Ye Mountain High." This was Mr. Hicken's favorite hymn.

Solon E. Low, M.P., was the first speaker and mentioned the life of the deceased in raising a little family of 16 children, 14 of whom were present for the funeral. Elder Low also spoke of the flne example in clean living and integrity of "Uncle Tom," for people could follow such
a pattern and enjoy life more fully.

Mr. Hicken's first wife died over fifty years ago, leaving six children for Thomas to care for. His second wife was Mary Lovina McMullin who helped rear the first family and has 10 children by this marriage. These children are all living.

Thomas Hicken was born in Provo, Utah. Dec. 19, 1852, and later moved to Heber City where he grew to manhood. He taught school for two years, then became assessor and collector of Wasach County for 10 years. He filled a mission for the L.D.S. Church in the southern states.

In 1902 he moved to Canada and has made a living farming.

He leaves to mourn his passing, his wife, Mary Lovina: the children, Albert of New Dayton; Elizabeth Scovllle, Raymond; Warren at Heber City, Utah; Mrs. Mary Moulton at Heber City; Mrs. Helen Duke, Vernal, Utah: Rufus at Spanish Fork, Utah.

These were children of his first wife. Children of Mary Lovina are: Rulon. Mrs. Rowena Low and Mac, all of Salt Lake City: Mrs. Ora Nelson and Mrs. Lorette Mendenhall of Richfield, Utah; Mrs Emma Kirkham, Ogden, Utah: Ben of Hollywood, Cal.; Mrs. Nellie O'Brien, Los Angeles; Mrs. Leah McKenzie of Medicine Hat and Orvin of Raymond.

Thomas E. Hicken had 16 children, 25 great grandchildren and 62 grandchildren.

Heber P. Allen was the second speaker and selected a few "gems" which he read and which would all be applicable to the life of Mr. Hicken and his family.

Bishop Wing gave the closing remarks and spoke of the acquaintance of the Hicken family back in Utah many years ago.

Reece Gibb sang a solo. "What Voice Salutes the Startled Ear" and a male quartet under direction of Frank P. Taylor sang "Invocation." T. T. Mendenhall offered the closing prayer.

Six of the sons, Orvin, Albert, Rulon, Mac, Warren and Rufus were pallbearers. Interment was made in the Raymond Cemetery.
