Caroline Frances called "Callie" was the daughter of Wesley "Dock" and Melinda (Harvey) Neal, who was one of the old Southern gentlemen; a big land owner who grew cotton, timber and riding horses. He operated his own cotton gin and saw mill. He also fought in the Civil War, entering when he was 16 years old. Dock and Melinda Neal had 4 children: Olivia, Caroline, Frances, Richard and Gabriel. They reared their family in the Stage Community, Scott Co. Miss. Callie loved to travel and her hobby was horseback riding, being known as the most beautiful horseback rider in the area. Her ambition was to become a nurse, but her father would not agree, as at that time women did not work outside the home.
