Lanelle Gaddis received her high school diploma from Morton, Miss, and attended Miss. State College for Women. She received B.S. Degree in Home Economics from Miss. Southern Univ. at Hattiesburg, Miss.; did graduate study at Miss. State Univ., in Starkville, Miss., Louisiana State Univ., Baton Rouge, La., and the Univ. of Alaska, Fairbanks, Alaska.
She was employed as Department Head of Home Economics for 4 years at Itawamba Co. High School, then by the Miss. Agriculture Extension Service as Home Economist, serving several counties. In 1952 she was employed by La. State Extension Service as Home Economist in Metropolitan area of New Orleans, La. where she and husband Wayman lived until he retired on medical disability from Humble Oil and Refining Co., due to an automobile accident in 1961. Lanelle was released from duties with L.S.U. and they moved to Clifton, Tex. where they owned ranch land. The move did not help his condition and in 1964 they moved back to La. where she continued service as Home Economist with L.S.U. They lived in Greensboro until retirement in 1970.
In addition to her regular service to people, she conducted 3 studies as a request of the United States Department of Agriculture on: (1) Time Management for Employees, (2) Farm and Home Planning for Families, and (3) Better Nutrition for Low Income. Information gained from the results of these studies was in later years used in the County, State and National plans for Extension Home Economists.
Organizations: Garden Club, Project and Program Chairman, Secretary; American Assoc. of Univ. Women, International Chairman, Membership Chairman; Home Economics in Home Making Club, President, Secretary, Program Chairman and Projects Chairman, State Section Chairman; Extension Home Economist, State and National; Civic Theatre; Church Activities: Sunday School Teacher, Pres. of class and secretary; member "Evangelistic Commission," Vice-Pres. and Program Chairman of church and the community older adult program; member of Bus Committee. Coordinating Council, Chamber of Commerce; National Assoc. of Retired Federal Employees, Vice-Pres.; Resolutions Chairman for the State, and National voting delegate for 3 years; American Assoc. of Retired Persons Social Committee Chairman; Home Economics Assoc., State, National and International; Epsilon Sigma Phi, State and National. In addition to attending 2 International Home Economics meetings in foreign countries, she visited in 20 foreign countries and spent 3 weeks behind the Iron Curtain.
Honors: 1965 Outstanding Extension Home Economist in State 6 National Organizations; Life Membership in Epsilon Sigma Phi, State and National; Life Membership in Extension Home Economist Organization; member of Miss. State Univ. Alumni Assoc.; 1975 was listed in the 8th edition of Who's Who in American Women; Partners in Progress at Miss. Southern Univ. with a Lifetime Graduate Scholarship in Home Economics named "The Lanelle Gaddis Long Scholarship," a revolving fund as long as the life of the college; Life Membership in U.M.W.
