-Byrum Martin enlisted in Civil War: May 15, 1862, Camp Jackson (30 years of age), enrolled by Litrill H. Hampton.
-Period - three years. Company G. 63rd Regime, Virginia
-Infantry on May 15, 1862; and was transferred eight months later into Company I - 63rd. Virginia Infantry when the company was reorganized.
-He was promoted to corporal - went to Tennessee and Georgia, when the regiment was transferred to Western Army.
-He was wounded November 30, 1864, (musket ball went through the foot - metatarsal bones fractured, while he was sitting by the camp fire, Franklin, Tennessee). He scratched the bullet out of the ground and kept it. Years later he gave this bullet to his daughter Ciller Jane Martin Utt (Mrs Tyler A Utt). The bullet was lost when the Utt House burned in 1937.
-He was Captured, December 17, 1864, Franklin, Tennessee.
-Prisoner - Louisville, Kentucky, until January 18, 1865. He was sent to Prison Camp, Chase, Ohio, January 18, 1865, where he remained until he was released, June 13, 1865.

Description on Oath Form: Complexion: Fair. Hair: Light. Eyes: Blue. Height: 5ft. 9 inches. Age: 33 years.

He was shot from his horse, June 20, 1900, by a young man by the name of Sawyers, who claimed he was shooting at a bird in a bush across the road. He was on his way to Hillsville, VA to buy a hay rake and a mowing machine. Garland Martin, his nephew, (son of Clerin Martin), who lived near by, was the first to reach the scene of the accident. He was carried into the house of George Henly, Road No. 670, 5 miles, S. E. of Hillsville, VA. He lived only a few hours after.
--Sawyer was cleared by the Court of the charge, but suffered a nervous break down, and didn't live too long after the accident.
