Death of Mrs. Julia E. Stevens
March 25, 1850 - July 5, 1905

Miss Julia Etta Sealey was born in Hudson, New Jersey on March 25, 1850. At the age of five years, she moved with her parents to Jackson County, Iowa where she was married on November 25, 1869 to Jamier Edmond Stevens. To this union, six children were born, two daughters and four sons, four of whom are living; one son and one daughter having preceded the mother to a better Home.

In 1873, Mr. and Mrs. Stevens moved from Iowa to Nebraska. They settled on a homestead in Polk County nine miles west of Stromsburg. They began to improve their homestead by erecting a sod shanty, where they made a very happy home. This home, while small in the beginning, began to grow. They were pleased with the land of their adoption. After eight years of cheerful toil, the husband and father sickened and died and left Mrs. Stevens with four small children, the oldest but nine years of age, and when six months later, another child came into the home, the widowed mother had all she could do to care for her family. But she was faithful and toiled on, and amidst sorrow and discouragement, there was much joy in seeing her children growing up. Out of energy and faithfulness to duty, the sod shanty has disappeared and a beautiful home has taken its place, a monument to faithful performance of daily living.

Mrs. Stevens was a conscientious Christian and a woman loved and admired by all. There was none more ready to lend a helping hand than she and not one could be less spared in the community where she lived. When on Friday the news of her sudden death, which occurred after a two hour illness from heart disease was reported abroad; there was universal mourning; that one whose life had been so full of good deeds should be cut short; for she was but little past 53 years of age.

The funeral was held on Sunday, July 9th at 2 o'clock at the Pleasant View Church. Rev's George Wash of Arborville and George Hebron of Fairfield, had charge of the services. Nearly five hundred people were in attendance, to take a last farewell of their friend. Interment was in the Shiloh Cemetery.
