John E. Hayter, Sr. 73 of Alpena formerly of Monroe died at 3:25 p.m. Sunday at the home of his daughter. He had been in poor health since April 2008. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and 1 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Rupp Funeral Home, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday. Pastor John Schott of the Petersburg Church of God Seventh Day will officiate and burial will follow at Trinity Lutheran Cemetery with military honors by VFW Post 1138, Monroe. Born January 25, 1936 in Monroe he was the son of Keith and Anna Maude (Burt) Hayter. He married Mary Lou Godfried on December 4, 1954 at Grace Lutheran Church. He was a Senior Master Sergeant in the U.S. Air Force retiring in 1976 with twenty-two years of service then he served as the director of CETA in Monroe until retiring in 1982. A 1954 graduate of Monroe High School and a 1972 graduate of the University of Nebraska, he volunteered eighteen years at the Monroe County Jail Ministries and twenty years as a member of the Gideon's. Surviving is his wife Mary Lou, sons John E. (Wenying) Hayter, Jr. of Canton; Craig S. Hayter of Temperance and Mathew A. (Maryann) Hayter of St. Louis, MO; daughter Casandra M. (Jeffery) Gilliam of Monroe; brothers, Eugene Hayter of Erie and David (Mary) Hayter of Monroe; sisters, Joann (Clayton) Bailey of Monroe and Beverly (Rolland) Laura of Monroe; eleven grandchildren and 1 great grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, Robert, Richard, William and Charles Hayter, three sisters Maryann Hayter, Dora Green and Agnes Stump.
